Introduction
This one-shot adventure is set in a alternative version of the Harry Potter universe. The players are 11 year old magical kids. They earned a place in Hogwarts and are immediatly facing a challenge when they arrive.
Running this one shot
Although this one shot covers a lot that might happen during this adventure and goes into detail how the locations the players come across look and feel. Despite that, players tent to do stuff, meet people and go to places they are not supposed to. It is your job as the Dungeon Master to fill in gaps where necessary and steer them back towards the main plot.
Text in boxes can be read out loud to the players when the conditions in them are met.
The other students can be everywhere the players go. Some will be nervous and have little magic experience. Others are a bit more advanced and may be smug about it, challenging others to dares or showing off. Roleplay these as you like.
The DM should read the full adventure before playing, to be aware of plot points and the available spells and prepare accordingly.

Dear [name],
Congratulations once again on your admittance to Hogwarts. During your trial you faced not only the challenges we put before you, but without your heroic deeds the lives of 2 applicants and a Hogwarts teacher would have been lost. For that I, Minerva McGonagall, am very grateful. As a token of of my gratitude I hereby award you with the title of “Honorary Prefect”. Seeing that you are not in your 5th year you will not be patrolling the corridors or be able to take house points, but you will be briefed on special day-to-day happenings and be granted several benefits. Good luck on your first school year.
With appreciation,
Minerva McGonagall
Hogwarts Headmistress
After reading the intro, let each person introduce themselves. Who are they, what do they look like and how did they react when they got this letter?
If they go to the group of first years
The first years have been moved to a classroom and dinner is served. Among the 50 students are a few prefects, questioning the students at random.
If they go to the classroom where it happened
You walk down the hall. Across from an arch that leads to a balcony is the door into the classroom where the hat was found. There are a few desk and chairs in a corner, a blackboard up front and in the middle is an empty, four-legged stool where the Sorting Hat must have been on.
The balcony is empty except for two harnesses, set in a crude position. You hear a cackling laugh in the distance and through a window of one of the towers you see a poltergeist floating around upside down.
“Ooooh” You hear him say, “Ickle firsties, already exploring? And great fans of Harry Potter, I can tell by your HP badges! Tell me, are you fans of the books or those movies?”
Answer books
“Of course you are, there is no Peevsy in the movies. Tell me, what are you doing here?”
Answer movies
“Pffff, there is no mention of Peevsy in there!! Now tell me, what are you doing here?”
“Tut tut, you want me to help with creating order? First you have to help me create a bit of chaos! I’ll tell you the names of the three students I saw. First I want you to pull a prank in the Potions classroom, and make it a good one.”
If they go to the Potions classroom
When approaching the classroom you find the lock broken open and the door slightly ajar. Inside it is quiet. Neat rows of desks stand ready for classes to begin. In the front is a blackboard and the teachers’ desk with [number of players] strong health and [number of players] mana potions. All of the walls are covered with shelves on which are pickled animals in glass jars, a wide variety of potion ingredients, cooking equipment and potions in glass vials in all colors imaginable.
The health potions heal 2d6 hp. The mana potions heal either a 3rd level spellslot, or a 2nd and a 1st level spellslot, or three 1st level spellslots.
They can find any specific ingredient or potion vial on a DC 10 Investigation check. When checking for missing/altered items in the room they discover (DC 18 Investigation check) an empty shelf where, according to the label, the “Polyjuice Potion” is supposed to be.
When specificly looking for “Polyjuice Potion”, they automatically find an empty shelf where, according to the label, the “Polyjuice Potion” is supposed to be.
When leaving the classroom Peeves blocks you, saying “OH! I thought we had a deal! Not giving you any names if you don’t pull a prank.”
When leaving the classroom Peeves pops up, saying “Is that all? Well I suppose you fulfilled your end of the bargain. While being my innocent little self and enjoying an evening breeze on the balcony I happen to see three naughty students sneaking around. Roderick Brandstone, Knotto Loops and Avery Atkins. Oh, and here is another thing I can give you..” after that he floats through the ceiling while dropping a huge stinkbomb. (DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, 1d6 damage on fail and automatic fail on stealth checks for 24 hours or until cleaned)
When leaving the classroom Peeves pops up, saying “Ooh hoo hoo! I think I’m starting to like you. You definitely fulfilled your end of the bargain. While I was being my innocent little self and enjoying an evening breeze on the balcony I happen to see three naughty students sneaking around. Roderick Brandstone, Knotto Loops and Avery Atkins.” After that he floats through the ceiling.

Confronting Roderick Brandstone
Roderick is a nervous sandy-haired boy. Because he is scared that he won’t get into any Hogwarts house he wants the players to accompany him to the “Battle Training Room” to prove to himself that he is brave.
You roam the hallways as Roderick leads you to a plain looking wooden door. Roderick looks at each of you, bolsters himself and walks into the room.
You enter an empty classroom and the door slams shut behind you. In front of each of you appears a small ball of light that slowly morphs into a large, aggressive, strange looking crab with jewels on it’s back. Roll for initiative.

With a big sigh of relief Roderick straightens his back and smiles at you. “Thank you. I think that after this that I’m going to be okay, no matter what house I will be in. I will tell you what I know about the Sorting Hat. When I went looking for the hat to try it out it had already been torn up. What I did find however is this empty flask labeled Polyjuice Potion”
Confronting Knotto Loops
Knotto is a tough and confident House-Elf girl. After getting confronted she asks the players to follow her into an empty classroom. She them calls out to her two House-Elf friends who appear by her side before she says “I’m innocent, but I’ll tell you what I know if you can defeat us in a duel. Let’s go!”.
Enemy House-Elfs
Enemy stats, attacks and further mechanics are available in the full one-shot.
“Wow, you guys put up quite a fight. Ok, I’ll tell you what I know, but you won’t like it. You say that I was in some hallway, but I never left the other first years. Whoever you think you saw, it wasn’t me.”
Confronting Avery Atkins
Avery is a cheery and confident girl who you helped save from the Acromantula’s. She won’t let the players intimidate her. If they want to know what she did, she wants something in return. She wants them to go to the Quidditch equipment room and get her a golden snitch.
When walking up to the room you see that words have been scratched into door saying “Peevsy wuz here”.
You step into the room and see an open chest in the middle of the room with only a Quaffle in it (2 chests if there are 5+ players). Next to the chest lay several small Beater bats. Throughout the room you see the two Bludgers (4 Bludgers is 5+ players) slowly fly around until the moment they spot you. They suddenly come racing towards you. Roll for initiative.
Bludgers
Enemy stats, attacks and further mechanics are available in the full one-shot.
“Wow, you really did it! Fine, I’ll tell you. I was only there to go to the bathroom a little further down that hall. I did however find these Chocolate Frog Cards in the hall. Does that mean anything to you?”

Confronting Curtis Philps
Curtis is a large and cocky centaur. He likes teasing anyone smaller than him which is almost anyone and has little respect for authority. He didn’t have anything to do with the destruction of the Sorting Hat.
Confronting Steward Stump without 3 pieces of evidence (flask, Knotto’s absence and the frog cards)
Steward found a private classroom to eat his dinner in. He is friendly towards the players until he is accused. After that he won’t admit to anything and will try to find loopholes in the accusations.
“All right, fine. It was me who destroyed the Sorting Hat. But don’t think you can just take my wand from me. My parents say that my family was cursed, but I think being a Maladictus is a blessing because no one can stop me!” After that he grows until his clothes rip, hair grows all over his body and his head splits into three until before you stands a massive, three-headed dog, ready to maul you. Roll for initiative.
Three-headed dog
Enemy stats, attacks and further mechanics are available in the full one-shot.
That last hit made Steward turn back into himself. He is still standing although he looks on the brink of passing out. With effort he says “Do you want to know why I did it? Because it is wrong! It is wrong to divide students into groups, based on some vague characteristics. We are still learning, growing, finding ourselves. Do you know why so many bad people were in Slytherin and why nearly all Aurors were in Gryffindor? Because they felt the group pressure and expectation and they never learned how to be any different. That may have worked in the past, but it doesn’t work anymore. You can have my wand, but if you want this madness to stop as well then I beg of you, please break my wand in half so that the Hat can’t be repaired and so this division will finally end.” After that he throws his wand to the ground at your feet.
Flitwick and Headmistress McGonagall are sad that the Sorting Hat cannot be repaired and come to the conclusion that things need to change. They send the Honorary Prefects to the great hall.
Flitwick and Headmistress McGonagall are happy and they repair the Sorting Hat, which makes them willing to hear out the Honorary Prefects want to end the sorting. After that they send the Honorary Prefects to the great hall.
